Labiaplasty

Schedule a Consultation

What is a labiaplasty?

The appearance and size of the labia vary naturally from woman to woman. Pregnancy, childbirth, aging, genetics, and changes in weight can alter the appearance and tissues of the vulva and may sometimes cause discomfort or concerns about appearance.

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that reshapes or reduces excess tissue of the labia minora (inner labia) and, when appropriate, the labia majora (outer labia).

Different techniques may be used depending on the concern. Labia majora that have lost volume with aging or weight loss may benefit from fat grafting, while excess or enlarged tissue may be treated with surgical reduction.

There is considerable natural variation in vulvar anatomy, and there is no single “normal” appearance. The goal is to address your individual concerns while preserving healthy tissue and normal function.

  • Remove or reshape enlarged or elongated labia

  • Restore volume to deflated or thin labia

  • Reduce irritation and discomfort during exercise or sexual activity

  • Improve overall proportion and appearance

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Labiaplasty may be appropriate for women who are bothered by the size, shape, volume, or symmetry of their labia because of physical discomfort, functional concerns, or personal aesthetic preferences.

Good candidates generally:

  • Have concerns about the labia minora, labia majora, or both
  • Experience irritation or discomfort with exercise, clothing, or sexual activity
  • Have changes following childbirth, aging, weight loss, or other life events
  • Desire improvement in symmetry, proportion, or appearance
  • Are in good overall health and able to safely undergo surgery
  • Have realistic expectations about what treatment can achieve

During your consultation, your surgeon will determine whether labiaplasty, fat grafting, or another approach would best address your concerns.

What to Expect

Previous Previous Previous Next Next Next

During your private consultation, your doctor will:

Listen to your concerns and goals. Your surgeon will evaluate the external anatomy, including the labia minora, labia majora, surrounding tissues, and overall proportions.

Together, you will discuss:

  • The size, shape, and symmetry of the labia
  • Whether excess tissue or loss of volume is contributing to your concerns
  • The appropriate surgical technique
  • Whether fat grafting, tissue reduction, or a combination of approaches would be beneficial
  • Whether other procedures may be appropriate
  • Your medical history and medications
  • Recovery, risks, and potential complications

Your surgeon will explain what changes are realistically achievable while preserving normal anatomy, sensation, and function.

We encourage you to ask questions, discuss your goals openly, and take the time you need to understand your options. Our goal is for you to leave your consultation with all the information necessary to make the treatment decision that is right for you.

The Procedure

Labiaplasty may be performed under local anesthesia or general anesthesia, depending on the extent of surgery and whether additional procedures are performed.

The procedure may include:

  • Careful reshaping or reduction of the labia minora
  • Reduction or reshaping of excess labia majora tissue when appropriate
  • Fat grafting to restore volume to the labia majora when indicated
  • Precise closure with dissolvable sutures

The specific technique depends on your anatomy and goals. When fat grafting is performed, a small amount of fat is typically harvested from another area of the body, processed, and carefully transferred to the labia majora.

The procedure generally takes 1–2 hours, although this varies when multiple procedures are performed. Labiaplasty is typically performed as an outpatient procedure, and you will go home the same day.

Recovery after labiaplasty

Swelling, bruising, tenderness, and mild discomfort are common after surgery. Swelling can initially be significant and may temporarily make the tissues appear uneven.

You will typically need:

  • Cold compresses during the first several days as directed
  • Loose, comfortable clothing
  • Careful hygiene as instructed
  • Temporary restrictions on exercise and strenuous activity
  • Avoidance of sexual intercourse until the tissues have adequately healed
  • Follow-up visits to monitor healing

Most patients can return to less physically demanding work within several days to 1 week, depending on the extent of surgery and the demands of their occupation.

Strenuous exercise and sexual activity are generally restricted for approximately 4–6 weeks, or until your surgeon determines that healing is sufficient.

Swelling gradually improves over several weeks, although subtle swelling and changes in tissue firmness may persist for several months as the final result develops.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can labiaplasty address both the labia minora and labia majora?

Yes. Labiaplasty can address the labia minora, labia majora, or both, depending on your anatomy and concerns. Treatment may involve reducing excess tissue, reshaping the labia, or restoring volume to the labia majora.

Can the labia majora be made smaller?

Yes. When the labia majora have excess or enlarged tissue, surgical reduction can be performed to create a more proportional appearance.

Can volume be added to the labia majora?

Yes. Fat grafting can be used to restore volume to the labia majora when they appear deflated or have lost fullness due to aging, weight loss, or other changes. This uses your own fat harvested from another area of the body.

Is labiaplasty only performed for cosmetic reasons?

No. Some women seek labiaplasty because excess or enlarged tissue causes irritation, pulling, or discomfort during exercise, clothing wear, or sexual activity. Others are primarily concerned about appearance. Both functional and aesthetic concerns can be discussed during your consultation.

Will labiaplasty affect sensation?

The goal of labiaplasty is to preserve normal sensation and function. Temporary changes in sensitivity, numbness, or tenderness can occur during healing. Your surgeon will discuss the potential risks of altered sensation as part of your consultation.

Will labiaplasty affect sexual function?

Labiaplasty is intended to preserve normal sexual function. Some patients may experience improved comfort during intercourse when excess tissue previously caused pulling or discomfort. However, as with any surgery in this area, changes in sensation or discomfort can occur.

Will I be able to have children after labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty does not generally affect fertility or the ability to give birth. Pregnancy and childbirth can, however, change the vulvar tissues and may affect the surgical result.

Can labiaplasty be performed after childbirth?

Yes. Many women consider labiaplasty after pregnancy and childbirth when they experience persistent changes in appearance or discomfort. It is generally best to wait until you have recovered from childbirth and the tissues have stabilized.

Are there different techniques for labiaplasty?

Yes. Several techniques can be used depending on whether the labia minora, labia majora, or both are being treated. Your surgeon will recommend the approach that best fits your anatomy and goals.

How long does it take to heal?

Most of the initial swelling and discomfort improves within the first few weeks. The tissues continue to heal and settle for several months, and your surgeon will guide you regarding when you can resume exercise, sexual activity, and other activities.

Can labiaplasty be combined with other procedures?

Yes. Depending on your anatomy and goals, labiaplasty may be combined with procedures such as fat grafting, treatment of the mons pubis, or other body-contouring procedures. The appropriate approach depends on your individual needs and overall health.
