Botox / Neuromodulators

Botox and other neuromodulators are a simple, nonsurgical way to soften facial lines and create a more refreshed appearance. By temporarily relaxing specific facial muscles, these treatments can reduce wrinkles caused by repeated expressions while still allowing you to look like yourself.
Treatment is customized to your facial anatomy, muscle activity, and goals. The goal is not to eliminate expression, but to create a softer, more rested appearance with results that look natural.
Botox is a brand of botulinum toxin, a neuromodulator that temporarily reduces the activity of targeted muscles. When a small amount is injected into a specific muscle, it blocks the nerve signal that causes that muscle to contract. As the muscle relaxes, the overlying skin becomes smoother and the appearance of certain wrinkles is reduced.
Neuromodulators work best on dynamic wrinkles—lines that become more noticeable when you smile, frown, squint, or make other facial expressions. They can also help prevent these lines from becoming more deeply etched into the skin over time.
The effect is temporary. Most patients see improvement within several days, with the full effect developing over approximately one to two weeks. Results typically last about 3–4 months, although this varies from person to person and by treatment area.
Neuromodulators can be used to treat a variety of areas of the face and, in selected patients, the neck.
Not every treatment is appropriate for every patient. The muscles responsible for facial movement are closely connected, so treatment must be carefully planned to maintain natural expression and facial balance.
Botox may be a good option if you are beginning to notice expression lines that you would like to soften or if you want to maintain a smoother, more refreshed appearance without surgery.
You may want to consider a neuromodulator if:
There is no single “right” age to begin treatment. Some patients begin when lines are becoming noticeable, while others choose treatment earlier to minimize the development of deeper expression lines.
Botox is not the right treatment for every wrinkle. Lines caused primarily by volume loss, loose skin, or changes in skin quality may respond better to dermal fillers, skincare, resurfacing treatments, or surgery. We can help determine which approach is most appropriate for you.
We will first evaluate your facial expressions, muscle activity, and areas of concern. Together, you will discuss the degree of movement you would like to maintain and the result you want to achieve.
Treatment involves a series of small injections into carefully selected muscles using a very fine needle. Most treatments take approximately 10–20 minutes, depending on the number of areas being treated.
Anesthesia is generally not necessary, although ice or a topical anesthetic can be used if desired. Most patients describe the injections as brief pinches or small stings.
Because treatment is based on your individual anatomy and muscle strength, the amount of neuromodularor (number of units) needed varies from person to person. The goal is to use an appropriate amount to achieve the desired effect while maintaining natural facial movement.
One of the advantages of neuromodulator treatment is that there is essentially no required downtime. Most patients return to their normal activities immediately.
You may notice:
These effects generally resolve quickly.
The effect of treatment develops gradually rather than immediately. You may begin to notice changes within a few days, with the full effect becoming apparent over approximately one to two weeks.
We will give you specific aftercare instructions. In particular, you should avoid rubbing or massaging the treated areas immediately after treatment.
