Labiaplasty

The appearance and size of the labia vary naturally from woman to woman. Pregnancy, childbirth, aging, genetics, and changes in weight can alter the appearance and tissues of the vulva and may sometimes cause discomfort or concerns about appearance.
Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that reshapes or reduces excess tissue of the labia minora (inner labia) and, when appropriate, the labia majora (outer labia).
Different techniques may be used depending on the concern. Labia majora that have lost volume with aging or weight loss may benefit from fat grafting, while excess or enlarged tissue may be treated with surgical reduction.
There is considerable natural variation in vulvar anatomy, and there is no single “normal” appearance. The goal is to address your individual concerns while preserving healthy tissue and normal function.
Labiaplasty may be appropriate for women who are bothered by the size, shape, volume, or symmetry of their labia because of physical discomfort, functional concerns, or personal aesthetic preferences.
Good candidates generally:
During your consultation, your surgeon will determine whether labiaplasty, fat grafting, or another approach would best address your concerns.
Listen to your concerns and goals. Your surgeon will evaluate the external anatomy, including the labia minora, labia majora, surrounding tissues, and overall proportions.
Together, you will discuss:
Your surgeon will explain what changes are realistically achievable while preserving normal anatomy, sensation, and function.
We encourage you to ask questions, discuss your goals openly, and take the time you need to understand your options. Our goal is for you to leave your consultation with all the information necessary to make the treatment decision that is right for you.
Labiaplasty may be performed under local anesthesia or general anesthesia, depending on the extent of surgery and whether additional procedures are performed.
The procedure may include:
The specific technique depends on your anatomy and goals. When fat grafting is performed, a small amount of fat is typically harvested from another area of the body, processed, and carefully transferred to the labia majora.
The procedure generally takes 1–2 hours, although this varies when multiple procedures are performed. Labiaplasty is typically performed as an outpatient procedure, and you will go home the same day.
Swelling, bruising, tenderness, and mild discomfort are common after surgery. Swelling can initially be significant and may temporarily make the tissues appear uneven.
You will typically need:
Most patients can return to less physically demanding work within several days to 1 week, depending on the extent of surgery and the demands of their occupation.
Strenuous exercise and sexual activity are generally restricted for approximately 4–6 weeks, or until your surgeon determines that healing is sufficient.
Swelling gradually improves over several weeks, although subtle swelling and changes in tissue firmness may persist for several months as the final result develops.
