Lip Lift

What is a Lip Lift?

A lip lift is a facial rejuvenation procedure designed to enhance the shape and position of the upper lip. As we age, the distance between the nose and upper lip gradually lengthens, the upper lip may lose its youthful shape, and less of the upper teeth are visible when the lips are at rest or during smiling.

A lip lift restores a more youthful relationship between the nose, lips, and smile by shortening the upper lip and gently everting the pink portion of the lip. The goal is not to create an exaggerated appearance, but to enhance the natural beauty and balance of your facial features.

  • Shorten the upper lip

  • Increase the visible pink portion of the lip

  • Create a more defined lip shape

Who Is a Good Candidate?

You may be a good candidate for a lip lift if you:

  • Feel your upper lip appears long or elongated
  • Desire greater upper tooth show
  • Would like a more defined upper lip without relying solely on fillers
  • Are seeking a permanent enhancement of upper lip shape
  • Are in good overall health
  • Have realistic expectations about what surgery can accomplish

A lip lift is particularly beneficial for patients whose concerns are related to lip position rather than simply a lack of lip volume.

What to Expect

ConsultationProcedureRecovery
Previous Previous Previous Next Next Next

During your private consultation, your doctor will:

  • Listen carefully to your aesthetic goals
  • Evaluate your lip shape, facial proportions, and smile
  • Determine whether a lip lift, lip filler, fat grafting, or a combination approach would best achieve your desired result
  • Review your medical history and medications
  • Discuss the benefits, limitations, risks, and expected recovery

Every patient’s facial anatomy is unique. Our goal is to create a personalized treatment plan that enhances your natural features while maintaining facial balance.

We encourage you to ask questions, discuss your goals openly, and take the time you need to understand your options. Our goal is for you to leave your consultation with all the information necessary to make the treatment decision that is right for you.

The Procedure

A lip lift is typically performed in the office under local anesthesia.

A carefully designed incision is placed at the base of the nose, where it is well concealed within the natural contours. A small amount of skin is removed, allowing the upper lip to be gently elevated into a more youthful position.

The procedure usually takes about one hour, and patients return home the same day.

Recovery after lip lift

Recovery following a lip lift is generally straightforward.

You can expect:

  • Swelling and bruising during the first one to two weeks
  • Temporary tightness of the upper lip
  • Mild discomfort that is typically well controlled with medication
  • Gradual improvement as healing progresses

Most patients feel comfortable returning to work and social activities within 7 to 10 days, although subtle swelling and scar maturation continue to improve over the following months.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is a lip lift different from lip fillers?

A lip lift repositions the upper lip by shortening the skin between the nose and lip, creating a permanent improvement in lip shape and tooth show. Lip fillers add volume but do not change the position of the upper lip. Many patients benefit from one treatment, while others achieve the best result with a combination of both.

Will I have a visible scar?

The incision is placed at the base of the nose, where it follows the natural contours of the nostrils. Although all surgery results in a scar, it typically heals very well and becomes difficult to notice over time.

Will a lip lift make my lips look unnatural?

No. The goal of a lip lift is to create a subtle, natural enhancement that improves facial balance without making the lips appear overdone.

Am I a better candidate for a lip lift or lip filler?

That depends on your anatomy and goals. Patients who have a long upper lip or minimal upper tooth show often benefit more from a lip lift, while those primarily seeking additional lip volume may be better candidates for fillers. During your consultation, your surgeon will recommend the treatment that best fits your needs.

Can I combine a lip lift with other procedures?

Yes. A lip lift is commonly combined with other procedures such as facelift surgery, facial fat grafting, chin augmentation, or injectable treatments to create more comprehensive facial rejuvenation.

When can I exercise after a lip lift?

Light walking is encouraged soon after surgery. More strenuous exercise and heavy lifting are typically resumed after several weeks, depending on your healing.

How long before a special event should I have a lip lift?

For an important event, we recommend scheduling surgery at least 2 to 3 months in advance. This allows swelling to resolve and the scar to mature so your results look natural and refined.
