Mommy Makeover

Mommy Makeover

What is a Mommy Makeover

Pregnancy and breastfeeding can bring lasting changes to the breasts, abdomen, and overall body contour. A Mommy Makeover is a personalized combination of cosmetic procedures designed to address these changes and restore proportions that may have changed after having children.

There is no single Mommy Makeover. Your treatment may include breast augmentation, breast lift, breast reduction, abdominoplasty, liposuction, or other procedures depending on your anatomy and goals.

Our goal is not simply to reverse the changes of pregnancy, but to create a balanced, natural-looking result that fits your body and your goals.

  • Restore volume lost after breastfeeding

  • Lift breasts that have changed position

  • Remove excess abdominal skin

  • Tighten separated abdominal muscles

  • Check Check

Improve overall body proportion and contour

Who Is a Good Candidate?

You may be a good candidate for a Mommy Makeover if you:

  • Have experienced changes in your breasts or abdomen following pregnancy
  • Have lost breast volume or developed breast sagging after breastfeeding
  • Have excess abdominal skin or muscle laxity
  • Have areas of localized fat that have not responded to diet and exercise
  • Are at or near a stable, healthy weight
  • Are finished having children, or do not plan another pregnancy in the near future
  • Are in good overall health
  • Have realistic expectations about what surgery can accomplish

What to Expect

ConsultationProcedureRecovery
Previous Previous Previous Next Next Next

During your private consultation, your doctor will:

  • Discuss the changes you have experienced since pregnancy
  • Listen to your goals and what you would like to improve
  • Examine your breasts, abdomen, waist, and surrounding areas
  • Evaluate breast volume, skin quality, and breast position
  • Assess abdominal skin, fat distribution, and abdominal wall laxity
  • Review previous surgeries, including C-sections or other abdominal procedures
  • Discuss which procedures may be beneficial
  • Review your medical history and current medications
  • Explain the benefits, limitations, risks, scars, and expected recovery

Because a Mommy Makeover may involve multiple procedures, your surgeon will consider not only what can improve your result but also what can be performed safely during a single operation.

The Procedure

The procedures included in a Mommy Makeover vary from patient to patient. Your surgeon will develop a treatment plan based on your anatomy, goals, and overall safety. Mommy makeover surgery is performed under general anesthesia. Many patients are able to return home the same day. For longer or more complex procedures, we may recommend that you remain in the hospital overnight after the procedure for observation.

Breast Augmentation

Breast implants can restore breast volume that may have been lost following pregnancy and breastfeeding or provide additional volume when desired. Implant size, shape, and profile are selected based on your anatomy and goals.

Breast Lift

A breast lift reshapes and elevates breasts that have become stretched or descended following pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight changes. A lift can be performed with or without implants depending on the amount of breast tissue and desired volume.

Breast Reduction

Some women experience an increase in breast size during pregnancy that persists afterward. Breast reduction can remove excess breast tissue and skin while reshaping and lifting the breasts.

Abdominoplasty

A tummy tuck removes excess abdominal skin and can tighten the abdominal wall when there is separation or laxity. It can restore a flatter, firmer abdominal contour following pregnancy or significant weight loss.

Liposuction

Liposuction can be used to refine areas of localized fat around the abdomen, waist, hips, or other areas. It is often combined with a tummy tuck when appropriate.

Not every patient needs every procedure, and combining procedures is not always appropriate. In some cases, staging procedures over time provides a safer or more predictable result.

Recovery after mommy makeover

Recovery depends on the procedures performed and how many areas are treated.

You can expect:

  • Swelling and bruising during the first several weeks
  • Soreness, tightness, and temporary changes in sensation
  • Temporary limitations on lifting and strenuous activity
  • A gradual improvement in breast and abdominal contour
  • Supportive garments during the early healing period
  • Several months of continued changes as swelling resolves and tissues settle

Many patients need approximately 2 weeks away from work, although recovery can be longer when multiple procedures are performed or when the work is physically demanding.

Walking is encouraged soon after surgery, while strenuous exercise and heavy lifting are restricted during the initial healing period. Your surgeon will provide specific instructions based on your procedures and recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

What procedures are included in a Mommy Makeover?

There is no standard combination. Common procedures include breast augmentation, breast lift, breast reduction, abdominoplasty, and liposuction. Your Mommy Makeover is designed around the specific changes you would like to address.

Do I have to have all of my procedures at the same time?

No. Although multiple procedures can often be performed during one operation, this is not appropriate for every patient. The number and combination of procedures will depend on your health, anatomy, goals, and the amount of surgery required. In some cases, staging procedures is needed to provide a safe and predictable result.

Is a Mommy Makeover only for women who have had children?

No. The term describes a combination of procedures commonly used to address changes associated with pregnancy and breastfeeding, but similar combinations may be appropriate for women who have experienced changes from weight loss, aging, or other factors.

Should I lose weight before a Mommy Makeover?

Patients generally achieve the best results when they are near a stable, healthy weight before surgery. Significant weight loss after a Mommy Makeover can change the breasts and abdominal tissues and may affect your result.

Can I have a Mommy Makeover if I plan to have another baby?

You can, but depending on when you are planning to have your next child, it may be preferable to wait until you are finished having children. Pregnancy can stretch the breast and abdominal tissues and may alter the results of surgery.

Can I breastfeed after a Mommy Makeover?

The ability to breastfeed after surgery depends on the procedures performed and individual factors. Breast augmentation generally has less effect on breastfeeding than procedures that remove or reposition breast tissue, although no procedure can guarantee that breastfeeding will be possible.

If future breastfeeding is important to you, discuss this with your surgeon during your consultation.

Will a Mommy Makeover remove my stretch marks?

Stretch marks located within skin that is removed during a tummy tuck may be removed along with that skin. Stretch marks outside the area being removed will generally remain.

Will a Mommy Makeover help me lose weight?

No. A Mommy Makeover is a body-contouring procedure, not a weight-loss procedure. It is intended to improve body shape and proportion after your weight has stabilized.

How much scarring should I expect?

The scars depend on the procedures performed. Breast surgery may leave scars around the areola and/or on the breast, while a tummy tuck creates a lower abdominal scar. Your surgeon will discuss the expected incision patterns and make every effort to position incisions favorably.

Scars are permanent, but they generally fade and soften over time.

How long will recovery take?

Recovery varies depending on the procedures performed. Patients having multiple procedures generally need more recovery time than patients undergoing a single procedure. Your surgeon will provide a personalized recovery plan and timeline.

When can I exercise after a Mommy Makeover?

Walking is encouraged shortly after surgery, but strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, and activities that place stress on the abdominal or breast tissues must be restricted during the initial healing period. Your surgeon will guide you through a gradual return to exercise.

How long will my results last?

The improvements from a Mommy Makeover can be long-lasting. However, your body will continue to change with aging, future pregnancy, weight fluctuations, and other factors. Maintaining a stable weight and healthy lifestyle can help preserve your results.
