Liposuction

Liposuction

What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes localized areas of excess fat that may be resistant to diet and exercise. By selectively removing fat from specific areas, liposuction can create a more defined and balanced body contour.

Liposuction is not a weight-loss procedure. It is most effective for patients who are near a stable, healthy weight but have areas of fat that are disproportionate to the rest of their body.

Liposuction uses small incisions and a thin cannula to remove unwanted fat from targeted areas of the body. Your surgeon carefully controls the amount and location of fat removal to create a smooth, natural contour.

Common treatment areas include:

  • Abdomen
  • Waist and flanks
  • Back and bra-line area
  • Hips
  • Thighs
  • Arms
  • Under the chin and neck
  • Male chest
  • Other localized areas of excess fat

Liposuction can be performed on its own or combined with procedures such as a tummy tuck, body lift, thigh lift, arm lift, or breast surgery.

  • Remove unwanted fat

  • Smooth contours

  • Improve definition and shape

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Liposuction is best suited for patients who have localized areas of excess fat and enough skin elasticity for the skin to contract after fat is removed. This is one of the most important factors in achieving a good result with liposuction.

Patients with significant loose skin or poor skin elasticity—commonly seen after substantial weight loss, pregnancy, or aging—may not achieve the desired contour with liposuction alone. In these situations, a procedure that removes excess skin, such as a tummy tuck, arm lift, thigh lift, or body lift, may need to be combined with liposuction.

It is also important to understand that liposuction is a body-contouring procedure, not a weight-loss procedure. It is designed to shape and refine specific areas rather than produce a significant reduction in body weight.

Liposuction also does not remove all of the fat from an area. A certain amount of fat must remain beneath the skin to maintain a healthy, natural contour, and there are limits to how much fat can be safely removed during a single procedure.

Good candidates generally:

  • Have localized areas of excess fat that are resistant to diet and exercise
  • Are at or near a stable, healthy weight
  • Have adequate skin elasticity for the skin to contract after fat removal
  • Understand that liposuction is intended to shape and refine, not produce significant weight loss
  • Have realistic expectations about the amount of fat that can safely be removed
  • Are in good overall health and able to safely undergo surgery

What to Expect

ConsultationProcedureRecovery
Previous Previous Previous Next Next Next

During your private consultation, your doctor will:

During your consultation, your surgeon will evaluate your overall body proportions, areas of excess fat, skin quality, and the underlying tissues.

Together, you will discuss:

  • Which areas may benefit from liposuction
  • How much fat can safely be removed
  • Whether your skin has enough elasticity to contract after fat removal
  • Whether liposuction alone or a combination procedure would be most appropriate
  • Incision placement and expected scars
  • Your medical history and medications
  • Recovery, risks, and potential complications

Your surgeon will develop a treatment plan based on your anatomy and goals rather than simply removing as much fat as possible. The goal is a smooth, natural contour with appropriate proportions.

The Procedure

Liposuction is typically performed under general anesthesia when treating multiple or larger areas, while smaller areas may be treated in the office under local anesthesia.

The procedure generally involves:

  • Small incisions placed in discreet locations
  • Injection of a specialized fluid containing local anesthetic to reduce bleeding and discomfort
  • Insertion of a thin cannula through the incisions
  • Controlled removal of fat using carefully directed suction
  • Contouring of the treated areas to maintain smooth transitions and natural proportions

The length of surgery depends on the number and size of the areas being treated. Liposuction is usually performed as an outpatient procedure, although an overnight stay may be appropriate when larger areas are treated or when combined with other procedures.

Compression garments are typically worn after surgery to help control swelling and support the tissues as they heal.

Recovery after liposuction

Swelling, bruising, soreness, and temporary numbness are common after liposuction. Some patients also experience drainage of fluid from the small incisions during the first several days.

You will typically have:

  • Compression garments for several weeks
  • Early walking to encourage circulation
  • Temporary restrictions on strenuous activity and heavy lifting
  • Follow-up visits to monitor healing
  • A gradual return to normal activities

Many patients can return to less physically demanding work within several days to approximately 1–2 weeks, depending on the number of areas treated and the demands of their occupation.

Most swelling improves over the first several weeks, although subtle swelling can persist for several months. The final contour becomes increasingly apparent as swelling resolves and the tissues settle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will liposuction help me lose weight?

No. Liposuction is designed to remove localized areas of excess fat and improve body contour. It is not a substitute for weight loss and is generally most effective when performed at or near a stable weight.

Will liposuction tighten loose skin?

Liposuction removes fat but does not remove significant excess skin. Patients with good skin elasticity may experience some natural skin contraction after liposuction. When substantial loose skin is present, a skin removal procedure such as a tummy tuck, arm lift, thigh lift, or body lift may be more appropriate.

What areas can be treated with liposuction?

Common areas include the abdomen, waist, flanks, back, hips, thighs, arms, neck, and male chest. The appropriate treatment areas depend on your individual anatomy.

Can liposuction be combined with other procedures?

Yes. Liposuction is frequently combined with procedures such as tummy tuck, body lift, thigh lift, arm lift, breast surgery, and facial or neck procedures. Combining procedures can allow more comprehensive contouring, although safety and the total extent of surgery must be carefully considered.

Will the fat come back after liposuction?

The fat cells removed during liposuction do not grow back. However, the remaining fat cells can enlarge with significant weight gain, which can change your contour. Maintaining a stable weight helps preserve your results.

How long do liposuction results last?

Liposuction provides long-lasting removal of the treated fat cells. Your body will continue to age and change naturally, but maintaining a stable weight and healthy lifestyle can help preserve your results.

How much fat can be removed with liposuction?

The amount of fat that can be safely removed varies based on the treatment areas, your health, and whether other procedures are being performed. Your surgeon will determine a safe and appropriate treatment plan rather than targeting a specific volume of fat removal.

Will I have scars?

Liposuction requires only small incisions, which are typically placed in discreet locations when possible. The scars generally fade with time but remain permanent.

When can I exercise after liposuction?

Light walking is encouraged soon after surgery. More strenuous exercise and heavy lifting are restricted during the early recovery period and resumed gradually as healing progresses. Your surgeon will provide specific instructions based on the extent of your procedure.
