The Procedure

Rhinoplasty is typically performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia.

Depending on your goals and anatomy, rhinoplasty may be performed using with incisions on the inside or outside of the nose or both. During surgery, your surgeon carefully reshapes the underlying bone and cartilage framework of the nose to achieve the desired improvements while maintaining proper structure and function.

Rhinoplasty may involve refinement of the nasal bridge, tip, nostrils, or internal nasal structures depending on your individual needs.

Most patients return home the same day after surgery.

Recovery After Rhinoplasty

Recovery after rhinoplasty is gradual, and patience is an important part of achieving the final result.

You can expect:

Swelling and bruising around the nose and eyes, especially during the first one to two weeks
Nasal congestion or a feeling of fullness during early healing
Temporary numbness or changes in sensation
Gradual refinement of the nasal appearance as swelling resolves

Many patients return to work or school after approximately 1 to 2 weeks, although subtle swelling can continue to improve for many months. The final shape of the nose may not be fully apparent until a year or longer after surgery, depending on the complexity of the procedure and your individual healing.

When will I see the final result from my rhinoplasty?

Most visible swelling from rhinoplasty surgery improves within the first several weeks, but subtle swelling—especially at the nasal tip—may take many months to improve. Many patients will not see the final result from rhinoplasty surgery until a year or more.

How long before a special event should I have rhinoplasty?

For an important event, we recommend planning surgery well in advance whenever possible. While many patients look presentable within several weeks, the nose continues to refine over time as swelling resolves.

Will there be scars on my nose?

All surgical procedures result in some degree of scarring, but the location and visibility of those scars depend on the type of rhinoplasty performed.

With a closed rhinoplasty, all incisions are made inside the nose, leaving no visible external scars. With an open rhinoplasty, a small incision is placed across the columella—the narrow strip of tissue between the nostrils. In most patients, this scar heals extremely well and becomes difficult to notice over time.

Your surgeon will recommend the surgical approach that is best suited to your anatomy and goals. Regardless of the technique used, every effort is made to place incisions as inconspicuously as possible and to help scars heal with an excellent cosmetic appearance.

When will I be able to exercise after surgery?

Most patients will be able to resume light activities, like walking, quickly after surgery, but strenuous activity, heavy lifting, and bending will have to be avoided for about 4 weeks. Activities that might result in an impact to the nose, like many sports, will need to be be delayed for 6-8 weeks.
