What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter for Surgery?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a calculation based on your height and weight that helps determine whether you fall within an underweight, healthy weight, overweight, or obese category. While BMI is not the only measure of health, it is an important guideline used in surgical planning.
At The Plastic Surgery Group, your safety and long-term results are our top priorities.
When considering procedures such as body contouring, BMI is a key factor in determining candidacy. A higher BMI is associated with increased surgical risk, including delayed healing, infection, and anesthesia-related complications. It can also impact the quality and longevity of your results.
For most body contouring procedures, a BMI of 32-35 is generally recommended, depending on the case type. Patients who are above this range may be advised to work toward a more stable, healthy weight before proceeding with surgery.
Reaching and maintaining a healthy BMI:
- Reduces surgical risk, Improves healing
- Enhances aesthetic outcomes
- Supports long-term satisfaction
If you are currently working toward your weight goals, we encourage you to focus on overall health and stability first. Once you’ve achieved a stable weight within a safe range, we would be honored to evaluate you for surgery and discuss your options.
Experience matters and so does your safety.
